How the Louisiana number is built

Start with $69,450 after your 401(k) and health premium. Subtract the $12,875 standard deduction. That leaves $56,575 taxed at flat 3% on all taxable income.

Effective Louisiana rate: 2.44% of gross pay. Using 2026 rates.

The rate, and what it actually costs you

Louisiana taxes wage income at a flat 3%. That is new. Until the end of 2024 the state ran a graduated schedule topping out at 4.25%, and a lot of payroll advice, and a lot of online calculators, still quote the old number. If a site tells you Louisiana's rate is 4.25%, it has not been updated since the December 2024 reform.

The rate is only half the change. The same law replaced the old combined personal exemption and standard deduction, which came to $4,500 for a single filer, with a standard deduction of $12,500, indexed for inflation starting in 2026. For tax year 2026 that figure is $12,875 for single filers and $25,750 for married couples filing jointly.

That deduction is doing more work than the rate cut. On a $75,000 salary with a 5% 401(k) contribution and a $150 monthly health premium, Louisiana's flat 3% produces an effective state rate of about 2.3% of gross pay, because the first $12,875 of taxable income is not taxed at all. Louisiana ends up cheaper on income tax than Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama, all of which sit next door.

What Louisiana takes instead

Income tax is the part of the Louisiana tax picture that looks best. Sales tax is the part that does not. Louisiana's combined state and local sales tax rate is consistently among the highest in the country, and because it is charged at the register rather than withheld from pay, it never appears in a paycheck calculation. A Louisiana paycheck goes further on paper than it does at the checkout.

Property tax runs the other way. Louisiana's homestead exemption removes the first $75,000 of a home's value from parish property taxes, which is generous by national standards and is a real part of why the overall burden lands where it does. Rates and assessments vary meaningfully by parish, so two people with identical salaries and identical houses can owe quite different amounts.

There is no state disability insurance withholding in Louisiana, so unlike California or New Jersey there is no extra line item beyond federal tax, state tax, and FICA.

What to actually do

If your withholding was set before 2025, it is probably still calibrated to the old graduated rates and the old $4,500 deduction. Check a recent pay stub against the number below. If the state line is noticeably higher than this estimate, you may be over-withholding and lending the state money interest-free until you file.

Common questions

How much state income tax does Louisiana take?

Louisiana applies flat 3% on all taxable income. What you actually pay depends on the deductions that come first, which is why the effective rate is lower than the headline rate. Run your own salary through the calculator above to see the real figure.

Does my 401(k) contribution lower my Social Security and Medicare tax?

No, and this trips up most calculators. Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce your income tax but you still pay Social Security and Medicare on that money. Pre-tax health premiums work the other way: they come out before FICA is figured. Both rules are applied above.

Which tax year does this use?

Federal figures use the 2026 brackets, standard deduction, and Social Security wage base. State figures use 2026 rates, verified on 2026-08-15. Source: Tax Foundation, State Individual Income Tax Rates and Brackets, 2026 (published 2026-02-17, statutes as of 2026-02-11).

Is this exact enough to plan around?

It is an estimate, and a careful one, but it models a straightforward wage earner taking the standard deduction. It does not handle itemised deductions, dependents, multiple jobs, head of household, self-employment income, or local income taxes. For anything with moving parts, talk to a tax professional.
